Living in Europe

Today, the Top 15 countries to expatriate to are only composed of European countries. Finland is in first place. According to this study, it is the fourth happiest country, and the country with the best quality of life. Austria is just behind, in second place. Indeed, the country is in the top 10 for three of the four criteria considered (level of happiness and well-being, health, and quality of life). Lithuania completes the podium. The Baltic nation is in the top 4 for health, employment opportunities and quality of life. However, its happiness score (6.21 out of 10) brings down its overall average.

Here are some estimates of general expenses in the most popular destinations.

Austria

Thanks to its alpine climate, its picturesque landscapes surrounded by countryside and mountains, Austria attracts expatriates from all over the world in large numbers, but especially those from Europe. If you have decided to settle down here, the rent will cost you an average of 560 euros per month. Add to that a monthly bill of up to 170 euros, which may be quite acceptable if you prefer to rent a house with a view of the Alps.

Austria also boasts one of the most impressive and efficient public transportation systems in Europe. In fact, Vienna has its own subway system, while most of the country's cities have buses and streetcars, not to mention an international railroad.

Why not start working out? A gym membership can cost you an average of 38 euros per month, and in some cities, it is even more expensive than in others. It must be said that the bargaining culture is also very strong in Austrian society, unlike in the rest of Europe. It is therefore not uncommon to be able to negotiate membership fees down with a little tact. Also, Austrian beer has nothing to envy to that of other countries in the region, and it will only cost you an average of 3.50 euros.

Belgium

A popular destination for expatriates, Belgium has much to offer, including a relatively affordable cost of living compared to many European countries. Indeed, rent usually costs an average of 600 euros per month, not including additional bills of 130 euros on average, which is still lower than in neighboring countries. Public transportation, on the other hand, is also affordable and can cost you an average of 50 euros per month. The country has an extensive public transport network including buses and streetcars, and Brussels has its own metro system.

With neighbors such as Germany and Austria, where the Oktoberfest is an unmissable event, we can sometimes forget about Belgium when it comes to beer production and consumption. But you will find many breweries producing beers that are as special and tasty as the others and that will cost you only 3.50 euros on average.

As far as gyms are concerned, you will find something for every taste and budget: from the highest levels to the least modern. Your membership should cost you an average of 29 euros per month.

Spain

Very appreciated for its Mediterranean climate, its magnificent beaches, not to mention its cultural dynamism and its calm and peaceful side, especially in the countryside, Spain is undoubtedly a preferred destination for many expatriates. The country is particularly popular with vacationers and foreign retirees who want to live happily ever after.

If you have chosen to settle in Spain, you will benefit, as many have done before you, from a very affordable cost of living, one of the lowest in Europe. A beer, for example, will only cost you an average of 2 euros. Rent is also cheaper than in the rest of the continent, averaging 620 euros with additional bills of about 115 euros. However, the cost of living in Spain can vary from city to city. For example, Barcelona and Madrid can be more expensive than other Spanish cities.

What about getting around? Thanks to an extensive transportation network including buses and trains covering the entire country, you will pay an average of 40 euros per month. What's more, some cities, such as Seville, Barcelona and Madrid, have their own metro and light rail systems.

To stay in shape, what better way than to join a gym, which will cost you an average of 36 euros per month.
